To create a safe crossing, a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians has been built next to the existing Scheepsjoagersbrug over the Oosterdiep in Bareveld.

The contractor has ASEC Kunststoffen B.V. requested to develop a new type of plastic plain bearing.

Unique to this hydraulically operated, unbalanced bridge is that it runs on composite bearings, a very strong plastic variant. The usual bearings for bridges contain in addition to the plastic part, also a part stainless steel. With this new material, the stainless steel part is unnecessary.

It is the first time that a Dutch bridge is equipped with this type of bearings. The bearings are mounted in the rotating parts of the bridge. The work was carried out to full satisfaction.
